Goddess | BANKS

BANKS-GoddessDark, metallic and other-wordly, Banks’ debut sounds like a break-up RnB album recorded on a spaceship 200 years in the future. With stark and crisp production and clean, pure vocals that slice through the nether, Banks is paving a way into a new avenue of RnB. Gloomy, murky and staggering production, coupled with bleak and emotional lyrics fill the majority of Goddess.

Strong tracks include the opener “Alibi”, the emotional “Waiting Game”, “Brain” and “Drowning”. Although Banks does not yet quite sound fully fledged as an artist, this is a strong and promising debut. The songs “You Should Know Where I’m Coming From”, “Under the Table”, and “Someone New” are simplistic ballads proving that she does not rely solely on her instrumentals. “Fuck Em Only We Know” is my personal favorite off the album, and definitely the most light-hearted song on “Goddess”.

It seems that Banks is not leaning entirely on her looks and production to carry her through her career, but only time will tell if she develops into the artist this album promises. With a sophomore release as strong or stronger than her debut, she could definitely carve a place into the industry.
