On July 8th UAA held a student Q&A for the UA Presidential candidate at the UAA Library. The UA President oversees the University of Alaska administration and implements the mission statement of each university. Essentially, the President is the CEO, cheerleader, representative, and politician for the university. With UA President Gamble’s retirement from office, Jim Johnsen is the only candidate that has been nominated.
Previous UA Presidents, including predecessor President Gamble have had military background, but Johnsen has a background in higher education. Johnsen has been traveling to the Alaska University locations across the state to campaign. KRUA was able to have an exclusive interview with Jim Johnsen.
Johnsen is against cuts across the board, and wants to promote student voices in university policies. In a month, we will find out whether or not Jim Johnsen is UA president.
