New Year, New Music!

Yay!!! New music. After the great music famine of Dec '09 we're finally
getting some new music in. So come on in to the station and pick up some
CDs or nab them off of the digital library.
Asobi Seksu / Rewolf (Alt) - If my memory serves me right Asobi Seksu
means "playful sex." So if that's what you're into then maybe this is
the band for you. But just because you're into playful sex doesn't
necessarily guarantee that you'll like them either, so take a chance on
Asobi Seksu (go ahead and take whatever meaning of that you want). The
band is known for their dream pop sounds but this album is a bit of a
step down in energy than their last few. They sound closer to Beach
House on this record (which comes at a funny time for them since the new
Beach House arrives next week).
Arnalds, Olof / Vid og Vid (Folk) - Sometime ago it'd be safe to say
that I hated Joanna Newsom. I'd say now that I don't really like her.
It'd be easy to say that Olof Arnalds is the Icelandic Joanna Newsom and
I like Olof a lot better. She's got the same minimalist instrumentation
and an almost as bizarre voice, but where Joanna sounds like a strangled
woodland fairy, Olof sounds more like a frosty willowisp. She's a member
of the band Mum. I'd recommend this to anyone who either likes Joanna
Newsom or wants to like Joanna Newsom.
Editors / In This Light and On This Evening (Alt) - This is an easy one:
Interpol + Joy Division. Well, Interpol is already a mixture involving
Joy Division. Let's go with: Interpol + Joy Division + a little David
Bowie. Still not a perfect explanation but you get the idea. So, really,
what more is there to say?
Beardo / Beardo (Alt) - I feel like I should hate Beardo. But I don't.
This is the perfect album throw on if you're going to get absolutely
wasted and start breaking shit. This is an easy equation (a lot easier
than Editors): Beastie Boys + Andrew W.K. There. Done.
Landes, Dawn / Sweet Heart Rodeo (Folk) - Remember Dawn? She's Josh
Ritter's girlfriend and she opened for him at his show here last year or
so. Well, we got her second album in and it's full of the same charming
folk ditties that she charmed us all with back then.
Oh No Ono / Eggs (Alt) - These guys show us that Danish bands all sound
alike. Or, well they all sound like Mew. These guys do. I actually can't
think of any other Danish bands besides Mew, but Oh No Ono sound like
them. They have the same wistful vocals and epic melodies. But take away
Mew's hair-metal tendencies and replace it with some orchestrated
idiosyncrasies and you've got Oh No Ono.
Vampire Weekend / Contra (Alt) - Well, here it is: their second album is
good, there's no getting around that. These guys sell themselves.
Woodpidgeon / Die Stadt Muzikanten (Folk) - Woodpidgeon are like a more
band-oriented version of Sufjan Stevens. Also they cover Tom Petty's I
Won't Back Down. Are you not entertained?
So there you have it. I kind of shortchanged Woodpidgeon, but that's how
it gets at the ends of these emails. So check out the new tunes and hit
me up if you have any questions or want me to put any of these CDs in
your box.
