San Diego wins, heads to Shootout Championship game against Washington State

Today's snowfall may have affected the outcome in game six of the men's bracket of the 2009 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, as the San Diego Toreros beat the Houston Cougars, 72-65.  Houston, whose practice facility during the Shootout is at South Anchorage High School, was not allowed to practice do to a power outage at the school.  Whether or not that played a factor is anyone's guess.

Washington State remains undefeated, advance to Shootout Championship game

In the fourth men's game of the 2009 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, the Washington State Cougars continued their undefeated season, improving to a 5-0 record, with a 78-69 win over the 0-7 Nicholls State Colonels.  

Although Washington State shot 53% from the floor in the first half, the Cougars still trailed NSU and their 39% shooting, 29-31.  In the second half, WSU dialed up their offense by a notch, shooting 63% from the floor, and outscoring the Colonels 49-38.  

Houston beats Oklahoma in Shootout thriller, 100-93.

In what turned out to be the highest scoring game of the Shootout so far this year, Houston defeated Oklahoma, 100-93.  After trailing for most of the game, Houston fought back emphatically in the second half, eventually leading by as much as 15 points.

Houston guard Aubrey Coleman was named player of the game, as he posted one of the best games for any player so far in this year’s Shootout, tallying 27 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.  Teammate Kelvin Lewis added 28 points, off of 6-11 shooting from beyond the arc.    

UAA Men Win Thanksgiving Day Shootout Game, Defeat 0-6 Nicholls State

For the third men’s game of the 2009 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, UAA defeated the now 0-6 Nicholls State Colonels, 72-58.  UAA shot 59% from the field, including a 75% clip from beyond the arc.  Although the 3-1 Seawolves turned the ball over 20 times, UAA managed to out-rebound the Colonels, 32-19, with most of those rebounds coming off of the defensive glass.

UAA women win Shootout Championship, men lose first game

The UAA women's basketball team defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 49-48 in the championship game of the 2009 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.  In what turned out to be a nailbiter, the Seawolves overcame a seven point halftime deficit to take home their fourth Shootout title in as many years.  

The Bearcats, whose team shooting was 55% at the half, fell apart in the second half, shooting only 18% from the floor.

UAA Women defeat Coastal Carolina, advance to Championship game

The first game of the 2009 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout took place tonight, with the UAA women's basketball team defeating the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 89-47.  The Seawolves dominated play with 54% shootoing from the floor, and 48% shooting from beyond the arc.  UAA Senior Forward Nicci Miller lit up the scoreboard with 24 points off of 10-14 shooting, including six rebounds.
